Kiana Madeira always kept a large Five Star folder with her. Because it helped her keep all her papers in order. In Netflix’s experimental slasher trilogy, she played two roles in three films. And each of these was set at a different time. However, the program was even more challenging. Because all three movies were shot at the same time in just a few months.
Therefore, the folders that Kiana Madeira had kept a crucial role. In addition, within this were the three scripts and, apart, she always wrote in them. “Every time we finished a scene, I would take notes. About how it was going, how my character felt, how I felt, what I think we ended up with in terms of tone. And, the trajectory of history ”. “My portfolio really helped me stay organized and on that track,” Maderia says.
Also, this folder helped her maintain her character. Even in the nineties setting, she decorated it with images from old magazines. On the other hand, Fear Street represents a first for Netflix. Because this is an excellent opportunity to merge a television broadcast with a horror movie. In fact, the movies are based on RL Stine’s young adult book series. And, these tell the story of a haunted town that spans generations.
The story begins in the 90s, goes through the 70s, and finally in 1666. In addition, Netflix created an interesting launch strategy to make this trilogy an event. Each of the films was released weekly for three weeks in July.
Surely you remember these characters from HIMYM.
Kiana Madeia: the director of the films
The director of all three films was Leigh Janiak. And, she says she was first approached to work on a Fear Street series in 2017. But, back then the idea was not established. The producers wanted to film the trilogy in one go in order to release it theatrically during the year. For this reason, Leigh was brought in to establish all the details more clearly.
Producer Kori Adelson comments: “It was really an exhaustive search to find the right person who had that clarity of vision. And, that work ethic and ambition that can take a process of years ”. On the other hand, Janiak comments that she was excited about the project idea but recognized that it was a challenge. “I was like, ‘How the hell do we do this?’ “I lived in these movies for a good year and a half, two years before we started shooting,” says the director.
At the same time, this included creating a television-style writers room. Therefore, that group analyzed the plot. In order to find a way to connect the three movies, but in a way that makes sense. In fact, the main focus was that the movement could sustain itself. And, at the same time, make it easy to work within the narrative arc.
How to make the audience satisfied?
“The most important thing I was thinking about was how to make the audience feel satisfied with each movie. But that I still want to learn more in a way that doesn’t feel like a gimmick. We spent a lot of time thinking about the endings of movie one and movie two. ” “I didn’t want it to feel like you should see the next movie because you didn’t get any response,” Janiak explains.
Without a doubt, all the preparation came in handy when production started. Surprisingly, all three movies were shot in 106 days in Atlanta. But, what should be noted is that the films were shot in no specific order. Because some actors had recurring roles or played more than one character. In the case of Kiana Madeira, all her roles were really important. For example, she played the heroine Deena in the 90s. She also had a prominent role in the 17th century.
On the other hand, the efficiency of the approach was related to economizing. Therefore, some equipment was reused during the recording. For example, a shopping mall that appears in multiple movies. This helped build visual parallels between the movies. But, it also helped create an effective production plan. In addition, Kiana Madeira mentions that for them it was really easy considering that they already knew what to do.
This is the amazing before and after of Sex and the City.
Kiana Madeira: a constant process
The whole process was very exhaustive, but at the same time perseverance could not be set aside. In fact, the filming days lasted between 12 hours and even more. Kiana Madeira explains that having been immersed in the world and the characters, helped her improve a lot.
“I think because the experience was so condensed. And, we filmed them all in a row, we were in it from the beginning to the end ”. “We did not have time to verify the experience. I was really able to maintain that intensity at all times. Whereas I think, if we had time in between, maybe I would have thought about it too much. We didn’t have time to do any of that. “Like living in a black hole; there is no past, there is no future, there is only Fear Street right now.”
Aside from the content creation process, the launch strategy was another important point. At first, this production was scheduled for theaters. But, in the end, Netflix chose the trilogy and this allowed for experimentation. Janiak mentioned that it was very liberating to be in a place where there are old rules. In general, the idea was to create moments using dating visualization concepts. Also, from compulsive observation.
In a few words, this means giving each movie a specific space. And, at the same time, getting viewers to the next installment quickly. Adelson adds that they felt that a week was an exact period between movies. Therefore, at that time they could have a boost. But, this would not succeed in cannibalizing the previous movie.

Different types of experimentation
It is common that little by little more companies move to transmission. And at the same time, the future of cinemas has a question mark. Most likely, there will be similar types of experimentation in series and movies in the future. In fact, for Janiak, the work done on Fear Street is something she will try again later.
“I am not a mother, but other women I know have told me about labor. It’s terrible, but then you have this kid and a week later you say, ‘Oh, I should do this again. I feel like I’m done with the labor part and we’re in the first few weeks afterward,” she says.
