Royal Rumble is an event produced by WWE and it takes place in the month of January, additionally to access to it a payment have to be made. This event was named after the Royal Rumble match, which is a fight where participants enter in timed intervals. This event is one of the most important after WrestleMania, SummerSlam and Survivor Series with the difference that the Royal Rumble is the first of the year.
The pitched battle format is not something new, it arose with professional wrestling in the XX but with the arrival of the Royal Rumble, all battles began to take different meaning where never before seen situations were generated.
All the events and all the battles that have taken place have been saved in our memories by their magic. Some fighters have only stayed a few seconds in the battle while others have been saved from being eliminated, in addition, we have been able to see teams that have been created to eliminate a common enemy.
As time went by, many situations are those that have occurred during the Royal Rumble, some of them atypical and others that probably will not happen in any other event than this. The event that took place last Sunday was number 34 and for this reason today we will remember the most magnificent moments during all these editions.
The 10 moments that have stood out during the Royal Rumble editions
Previously, the Royal Rumble was just a tournament without much merit, but over time this became one of the greatest opportunities for the winner to become the challenger to one of the most prominent WrestleMania titles. In 1990, a peculiarity occurred, Hulk Hogan entered the pitched battle as number 25 and won the edition because he eliminated six rivals.
On the other hand, Brock Lesnar surprised the entire audience when he announced his participation and assured that he would not have any WrestleMania challenger because he will eliminate all of them. In addition, it was possible to theorize about a supposed union between two main titles.
Brock eliminated 13 opponents and tied for the historic mark with Braun Strowman, despite this, the monarch was eliminated by him.
On some occasions, WWE has had to change some wrestlers who were going to enter the Royal Rumble but these changes have always been made with time except for the 2019 women’s edition. Lana, who had participated in her husband’s fight against Shinsuke Nakamura, was pushed and this caused ankle problems.
Despite this, she wanted to enter the real battle but when it was her turn, in place 28, she could not put her foot down and the medical staff had to assist her.
In the fight for the Smackdown Championship, Becky Lynch was defeated, but she asked the agent, Fit Finlay, for the opportunity to enter as a pinch-hitter. Fit was not in complete agreement, but with Lana’s yelling and Becky’s pressure, he authorized her to enter shift 28.
Daniel Puder was the one who won the fourth season of Tough Enough in 2004 and just a few people currently remember him. This achievement made him a very interesting prospect in wrestling because he was a mixed martial artist and many people thought that Ken Shamrock would eventually have a successor, but unfortunately, his career was thwarted by this young man’s ego.
During the Tough Enough, Daniel had some problems in the locker room and all these situations were seen in a bad way by some fighters who when he entered the Royal Rumble, they beat him up.
Daniel entered with number 3 and numbers 1 and 2 were Eddie Guerreo and Chris Benoit who gave him several rounds of punches until they got tired and eliminated him. After this, Puder disappeared from WWE but has had small appearances in New Japan.
No one to fight
Another person that we can highlight during the Royal Rumble editions is CM Punk, this has been considered one of the most charismatic and rude fighters but at the same time one of the most hated. During the 2010 edition, Punk entered number 3 and was unrivaled while competing 4 times.
The time he was alone in the ring was used to promote his faction at that time: The Straight Edge Society. After spending more than 10 minutes in the ring, he was eliminated by Triple H.
Land of giants
In general, in events like these it is very common to take advantage of physical size, for this reason anyone is surprised to see fighters over two meters like Big John Studd who won the second edition of the Royal Rumble. On the other hand, we have also been able to see fighters who are not so big and women.
What is not very common is to see a dwarf participate in this type of event, however, in 2011, on turn 23, Hornswoggle entered who would face an opportunity to achieve the star fight. Hornswoggle did not eliminate anyone, but he was able to stay for 9 minutes in the ring.
For this event, WWE keeps a thirty-man format, but this has been modified on some occasions. In 2011, the largest pitched battle in all history was held because 40 fighters participated, however, in 1988 during the first Royal Rumble only 20 gladiators participated and the first place went to Jim Duggan.
As in any place and event, there are always rules that the participants should know. In this case, for the Royal Rumble, the rule says that to be eliminated you must come out over the third rope and put both feet on the ground.
In 1997, Mil Mascaras, current member of the WWE Hall of Fame, was eliminated for breaking this rule, but the reality is that he went out by the second and third rope to look for height and fall on top of Pierroth.
In some editions of the Rumble we have seen some eliminations that have been made due to distractions from the fighters. This was the case of Shawn Michaels who was one of the fighters that has given more history to this event. In 2006, when he entered as number 25, he could eliminate three opponents.
Apparently, this did not like Vince McMahon who made a plan for this fighter to lose the battle. Vince appeared on the ramp where he began to speak with HBK, this situation made Michaels not notice that Shane McMahom entered to the ring. Shane threw him over the third rope and he was knocked out.
Stone Cold Steve Austin
During all the editions of the Rumble, many situations have developed that leave us a lot to think about, one that caught the most people’s attention was when a fighter who had already been eliminated, was declared the winner of the contest. We are talking about Stone Cold Steve Austin who had been eliminated by Bret Hart.
The curious thing is that the referees weren’t watching the elimination because they were separating Terry and Mankind who were in a fight. For this reason, Cold returned and wiped out all the remaining fighters.
In this edition of 2021, the Rumble not only focused on the participation of some fighters, but also on the presentation of Bad Bunny who made his appearance during this event and sang his song Booker T.
This Puerto Rican sang his single, but he left the last part to King Booker to finish the song. This artist has made it clear that he is a fan of WWE and this song is not the first that has to do with wrestling. He has previously had collaborations with Ric Flair and Stone Cold.
